Lunar New Year welcomes the year of the snake!

What is Lunar New Year?

Lunar New Year is a vibrant and culturally rich celebration celebrated by millions around the world. Particularly in Asian countries such as China, Vietnam and South Korea. 

Lunar New Year is also known as Chinese New Year or Spring Festival. The 2025 Lunar New Year falls on the 29th January, celebrating the year of the Snake. 

Traditions and Celebrations

 

Preparations: Before Lunar New Year, families will clean their house thoroughly, this is to sweep the bad luck away and make way for good fortune. People will buy new clothes, decorations and food to prepare for the festival. 

 

 

Red Decorations: Homes are adorned with red lanterns, couplets and paper cutting to symbolise prosperity and ward off evil spirits. Spring couplets are poetic verses written on red paper with black or gold ink. The spring couplets are then pasted on doorways to express good luck, health and prosperity for the coming year. 

Firecrackers and Fireworks: These are set off to scare away the evil spirits and bad luck.

Family Feasts: On New Year's Eve, families will gather for a large feast, which often includes dishes like dumplings, fish and rice cakes, each symbolising different blessings. 

Red Envelopes: Known as "hongbao" in Chinese is envelopes that are filled with money are given to children and unmarried adults to bring good luck. This is often gifted by married couples.

Lantern Festival: The celebrations culminates with the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the New Year, featuring lantern displays, lion dances and eating tangyuan.

Year of the Snake

The snake is the sixth animal in the Chinese zodiac cycle. People who are born in the year of the snake are often seen as wise, intuitive and grateful. They are also known for their calm demeanor and strategic thinking. 

 

The year of the Wood Snake is associated with growth, renewal, and transformation. This year is expected to bring opportunities for personal and professional development. It is time to focus on shedding old habits and embracing new beginnings.
